How to Improve Your Nutrition by Crowding Out Foods

Have you ever tried to make healthy changes to your nutrition but you couldn't stick with it? Maybe you had a few good days but then an intense craving came out of nowhere. The craving was so overwhelming and powerful that you gave in and went back to your old eating habits.

This is so common! You are not alone! Don't beat yourself up. It is so hard to be successful when you make major changes to your nutrition. Have you ever thought about making small changes and crowding out the less nutritious foods gradually?

What is Crowding Out?

Many nutrition experts give their clients a list of foods to avoid and foods to eat, which explains why so many people are turned off by nutrition. My approach is different – by eating and drinking foods that are good for you, you will naturally have less room and desire for unhealthy foods. Simply put, you will crowd out the unhealthy food in your diet. This takes small changes to your nutrition and a little practice to make happen, but I provide support to clients along the way.

How to Crowd Out

To start crowding out foods, I suggest you make a list of foods you would like to eliminate from your diet. These are the foods you want to crowd out so we will call this the 'Crowding Out List'. Also make a list of foods you would like to add to your diet. We will call this the 'Healthy Additions List'. In this list, you could have healthy foods that you like but are not currently eating and you could also have healthier (but delicious!) substitutes for some of the foods you want to crowd out.

Once you have this list, take a look at it frequently to remind yourself of your goal to start crowding out. Each week, try to replace 1-2 foods on your Crowding Out List with foods from your Healthy Additions List. Make the commitment to yourself because you deserve to be happy and healthy!  You are also capable of much more than you realize. You have the ability to transform your life one baby step at a time.
