Yo-Yo Diets, Binge Eating, and Looking for Quick Fixes

I have been on a journey of wellness and lifestyle change for many years. Prior to my transformation, I was stuck in an unhealthy cycle of fad diets, yo-yo dieting, and emotional/binge eating. I struggled with my commitment to healthy lifestyle changes and continued to make excuses. The excuses kept me stuck for many years in a vicious cycle.

Chronic Pain and Other Health Issues

In May 2012, I developed severe plantar fasciitis and tarsal tunnel syndrome in both feet which drastically limited my mobility and caused chronic pain. I could barely walk without horrible pain and shooting nerve pain. I emotionally ate to soothe my physical and emotional pain. I became a hermit since I could barely walk.
My daily life became so hard and difficult. I felt trapped and scared. After trying many alternatives with no success, I succumbed to the fact that I had to have surgery on both feet. I had foot surgery on my right foot in February 2014. While my pain was drastically reduced in that foot, the pain in my other foot continued to increase. I also had eczema, acid reflux, high blood pressure and high cholesterol. I knew that if I did not change my eating soon, I would be required to go on medication for these issues and I may develop type 2 diabetes.
In early 2015, my weight was out of control and I was the heaviest I had been in my life. I was very unhealthy and unhappy. The pain in my left foot continued to get worse. I had cortisone injections instead of surgery because I was hoping it would get better on its own. I knew I needed to change my life or I would risk getting more medical issues.
Every day I felt miserable mentally and physically. I would profusely sweat from doing barely any activity. I had aches all over my body. I was embarrassed for anyone to see how out of control I had gotten. I had no energy. I was depressed due to my health issues. I could feel my heart beating faster than it should even when I was just sitting on the couch.
I was always in a state of stress: worried about seeing people I knew, worried about fitting into a chair or breaking a chair. I would not travel on a plane because I couldn't fit in the seat plus walking around the airport was too tiring and hurt my feet. I beat myself up every time I binge ate or emotionally ate. I beat myself up every time I looked in the mirror asking myself in disgust, "How did you let yourself get this way?"
I knew I did not want to live like this the rest of my life.

Commitment and Transformation

By June of 2015, I decided to commit to myself even though I was not sure how or even if I could accomplish my goals. My main goal was to create a maintainable healthy lifestyle by eating whole foods and adding exercise to my life. Within 15 months from the start of my commitment to myself, I lost 185 lbs healthily (more than 50% of my body weight!) without dieting, without surgery, without weight loss drugs, or starvation.
My determination and dedication were the keys to my success and it did not require eight hour workout sessions or other weight loss gimmicks. Instead, I made small gradual changes to my nutrition to replace processed foods with whole foods and incorporated exercise into my life.
I accomplished my goals by: 1) Truly committing to myself, 2) Gradually making small lifestyle changes so that I did not feel overwhelmed, 3) Learning to love myself unconditionally, 4)  Accepting that I did not have to be perfect, 5) Learning how to manage cravings and my emotional/binge eating

I had lost 53.2 lbs and my mindset had completely changed in just 3 months from not believing in myself to believing I could accomplish my goals.

Foot Surgery

I had surgery on my left foot in December 2015. By this time, I had lost almost 100 lbs, but the pain was still getting worse every day. The recovery from surgery was very difficult as I had pain and was not able to be weight bearing on my left foot for several weeks. I was not able to do my regular exercise routine. However, I continued to commit to myself by eating well and creating a new exercise routine that consisted of seated cardio and seated free weights. Committing to myself during such a difficult time improved my belief in myself.
Since the foot surgeries, I still experience minor pain, but my physical activity level has dramatically improved. I ran my first 10K (6.2 miles) on January 28, 2017 and ran my first half marathon (13.1 miles) on April 9, 2017! I didn't think I would be able to walk around the block let alone run!
Since then, I've run 2 more half marathons, 3 5K's (3.1 miles), and 2 more 10K's. I have completed a duathlon (1.5 mi run, 12 mi bike, 1.5 mi run), an Olympic distance triathlon (1600m swim, 24 mi bike, 6.2 mi run), and a Sprint Plus triathlon (1000m swim, 12.8 mi bike, 4 mi run).

Many Medical Issues Disappeared!

After only three months of gradually eating less processed foods and more whole foods, my blood pressure and cholesterol drastically improved and my acid reflux went away. Now, my blood pressure and cholesterol are normal. Also, I haven't had an eczema breakout in over a year. That is amazing to me considering I was constantly getting bad eczema breakouts all over my hands, arms, elbows, ankles, etc for 20 years.

Chris & Heidi Powell

In March of 2016, I had the pleasure of meeting the amazing Transformation Specialists Chris and Heidi Powell.  In case you don't know the Powell's, they used to have a TV show on ABC called Extreme Weight Loss.
When I first met the Powell's, I had lost 126 lbs. I told them how they had inspired me to commit to myself and begin my transformation. They were touched by my story and Heidi said she wanted to put my story on her blog. You can read Heidi Powell's blog post about my transformation here.  Also check out my Facebook page dedicated to my journey here.
I also attended Chris and Heidi Powell's Coaches Workshop in 2017 and worked as a Transformation Coach for Chris and Heidi's Transform Coaching program from July 2018 to January 2020. I learned many additional transformation tools which I have incorporated into my health coaching methods.
